A tomentose bushy shrub, branches profusely armed, flexuous, divaricate at +/- right angles; young twigs grey-pubescent or tomentose. Stipular spines in pairs, one straight, slender, very sharp, up to 15 mm long, the other smaller, up to 5 mm long, much curved, both spines puberulent. Leaves alternate, distichous; petiole ca. 2 mm long, tomentose; leaf lamina 1-2.5 cm x 0.8-2 cm, elliptic to orbicular, dark green and more or less densely pubescent above, velvety-tomentose beneath, margin entire or serrate, apex obtuse, round or truncate, sometimes mucronate or apiculate, base round to subcordate, strongly 3-nerved, lateral nerves prominent. Flowers in compact, very short axillary cymes. Flowers 4-5 mm across, greenish- yellow, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous. Flower structure similar to that of Z. mauritiana. Drupes 8-12 mm x 8-12 mm, usually globose, red or black when ripe, 2-celled, 2-seeded.
